What is Therapeutic Recreation?

Therapeutic recreation is the provision of Treatment Services and the provision of Recreation Services to persons with illnesses or disabling conditions. The primary purposes of Treatment Services which are often referred to as Recreational Therapy, are to restore, remediate or rehabilitate in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. The primary purposes of Recreational Services are to provide recreation resources and opportunities in order to improve health and well-being.

Our Services

Therapeutic Recreation at Neuro Core provides functional interventions, leisure education and participation opportunities. These processes support the goal of assisting the individual to maximize the independence in leisure, optimal health and the highest possible quality of life.

Functional Intervention

The general goal of functional intervention is the elimination of, improvement in, or adaptation to functional deficits that constrain participation in recreation and leisure.

Leisure Education

Leisure Education provides opportunities for participants to develop and/or enhance leisure awareness, social interaction skills, leisure resources, and/or leisure activity skills. A balance between the challenge of the activities and the skills of the participants are the main intentions. In addition, the intent of this program is to assist individuals to become involved as independently as possible in community activities/events. Programs are offered either in a small group setting or on a one-to-one basis. Small group programs are planned for individuals who share similar needs, interests, and abilities. One-to-one sessions are developed based on the results of the individual's needs assessment and interests.

Participation Opportunities

Leisure and recreation are essential parts of a healthy life. Research has clearly shown that physical activity, stress reduction, good nutrition, mental stimulation and friendships are necessary to good health! This is why Neurocore has focused on developing many participation opportunities for individuals seeking private and community based activities one on one and group activities. Wheelchair Tennis:

In wheelchair tennis, the player must master the game of tennis as well as the wheelchair. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability. Wheelchair tennis provides persons with disability the opportunity to share in activities with their peers and family, whether able-bodied or disabled. A wheelchair player who plays against an able-bodied person in singles or doubles is allowed two bounces of the ball while the able-bodied player is allowed one bounce. Playing wheelchair tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Wheelchair tennis is a fun and exciting sport to be involved in!
